If that doesn’t sound like a weird headline, I’m not sure what is.
The US Food and Drug Administration has approved a new pill for treatment of constipation. You know, that thing where your bottom doesn’t want to work. You take food in but nothing comes out. Yes, that thing.
What’s different is that this new thing is a mechanical pill. You swallow it, just like you would any other. Once in the colon, this pill vibrates, stimulating the muscles in the colon wall that push matter through the colon and out of the body. This mechanical pill doesn’t dissolve, it simply gets pooped out with everything else.
In FDA parlance, this pill is a Class 2 medical device, in the same category as contact lenses. Now if that doesn’t bring a terrible image to mind . . . .
This mechanical pill is named “Vibrant”.
Life, if we couldn’t find some weird humor, we’d spend too much time crying.

Huh. I wonder how itโs powered. Who thought swallowing a vibrator might make you **** yourself. ๐

Iโve been imagining other applications for this technology.
