A New Wrinkle in Cosmetic Surgery

There’s a fine line between vanity and positive self image and people have been know to go to extremes in search of a more youthful appearance. The latter offers important health and social benefits.

A positive self-image can boost our physical, mental, social, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

Maintaining that positive self image can be a challenge as age, ultraviolet rays and physical damage do a number to our skin. Some countries, notably Brazil, recognize the importance of physical appearance to overall well-being, and include cosmetic surgery as a use of public health funding. A doctor can prescribe cosmetic surgery for physical or mental health reasons, and government funds can be used by lower income consumers to pay for it. One scholar dubbed this as the “Brazilian right to beauty.”

The classic solution for those seeking to turn back the damage of time has been the face lift, tummy tuck, butt lift or breast augmentation or reduction. There are a variety of risks with these procedures including the risk of infection and scarring, as well as substantial recover time. and there have been deaths from mishandling by incompetent or unlicensed care givers.(3,4)

As of this past month, there is a new technology for removing wrinkles from the lower face, approved by the FDA. The Ellacor is a dermal microcoring device. Instead of lifting or stretching the skin and surgically removing excess, this device removes “core samples” of dermal and epidermal tissue from thousands of tiny pinholes, The skin pulls together to heal the tiny holes, achieving much the same result of a lift without the risks. Recovery time from this surgery can be as little as 2-3 days.

“This is a new technique that offers the ability to remove a significant amount of damaged, lax skin without concern for scarring,”

Matthew Avram, MD, JD (5)

The device was developed by a team of dermatologists and plastic surgeons at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, and announced at the annual meeting of the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery.(5)

Since this is a newly approved device, logic suggests that it will have applications on other skin areas and that the current FDA approval may be extended to other uses as testing continues.
