The New York Times reports today that a patient received an injection of stem cells that control the production of insulin, and now appears to be free of diabetes. If this holds up, this will be the first time a patient with Type 1 diabetes has been freed from the disease. Type 1 is the child-onset version typically linked to genetic issues.
Stem cell research as a treatment for diabetes has been underway for some time. Of course, this opens the possibility for new treatments for the more common Type 2 diabetes (the adult-onset version) and perhaps a return to earth for insulin pricing as a result.
A small announcement with earth-shaking potential.
