What the world needs now . . .

No, this isn’t about the Bacharach song. Nor is it about the need for love or peace or equality.

Rather, it’s a newly announced technology breakthrough!

Yes, it is . . . the light-emitting tattoo!

Just think, no need for flashlights and batteries. If in the dark, just roll up a sleeve or take off a shirt. Although if the light is behind you, that could be a problem.

Seriously, scientists have managed to mount light emitting diodes on transfer paper, resulting in what is basically a light-emitting decal. You apply it to the target area, moistened with a little water, and voila, the area lights up.

Isn’t that just what we all wanted? Imagine the uses! Mischief Night pranks! Walpurgis Nacht! Every streaker will want one! Or more!

And to whom do we owe a debt of gratitude for this creation? Why the Italian Institute of Technology (Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia), of course. Who else could imagine something so useful?

Seriously, the LEDs are organic and about 1/3 the size of a red blood cell. The research team envisioned that this could be used in cancer treatments in the future, although how that might work is unclear.

  1. Very, umm, informative? Just one thing to consider though: if you were going to streak would you really want a lit tattoo showing up and exactly where…on second thought, forget that part. I really don’t think I’m old enough to see that answer!
