How Effective Are Flu Vaccines?

We finally have a statistical analysis of the 2018-2019 flu seasons. We are in the 2019-2020 seasons now, so this analysis is for the most recently completed season.

Projecting the number of cases has there been no vaccine, the study concludes that the vaccine reduced:

  • Flu illnesses by 45 million;
  • Medical visits for treatment of flu by 2.3 million;
  • Hospitalizations for flu by 58,000; and
  • Deaths from flu by 3,500.

Without a vaccine, would you have been one of these additional casualties? No way to say.

However, that’s a substantial burden of hardship and cost that no one had to carry because of the vaccine.
