For those who were in denial about technology killing jobs, there’s the announcement today that the US Postal Service is testing driverless trucks to carry mail shipments between Phoenix and Dallas.
During the test period, the trucks will have both a backup driver and an engineer on board. However, the trucks may not be bound by safety regulations regarding driver sleep periods and breaks — and ultimately the end result will be faster shipments, fewer drivers and fewer trucks.
The American Trucking Association estimates that there are 3.5 million truck drivers in the US. How many of these jobs will be gone within the next five years? What do we do with the people?
