24/7 Wall St. did their usual, thorough analysis and came up with the ranking of the 50 US states by level of risk to violence. Their index looks at multiple factors, which is useful given inconsistent reporting of basic crime measures.
Which states are in the top five in terms of risk? Well, not any of the ones with major cities. The worst, starting with the worst, are

For what its worth, these are all states that have relatively lax gun laws. The implication is that, statistically, guns don’t necessarily make people safer. (Brains help.)
