Trump apparently has made a decision to withdraw the US military from Syria. The decision does two things:
- It leaves Russia and Iran in control of what happens in Syria. In recent talks about how to resolve conflict in the region — a summit involving Russia, Iran and Turkey — neither the US nor Syria were invited to participate. The Syrian government will do whatever Russia wants. The US doesn’t matter.
- We lost five US soldiers in Syria. Now five isn’t a big number, but it is big to the families affected. Those are now completely wasted deaths, having accomplished nothing.
Why did we bother?
The meeting today between senior Chinese and Russian military leaders signals that the two countries will combine against the US if America takes military action anywhere, much less in North Korea.
The US doesn’t look “great” — it looks foolish, stupid and irrelevant.
